Sowing - the first week

Week 1 - commencing 29 March 2013
External sowing

Where: Born free (south-facing)
What: Wildflower seeds
Conditions: Flung the  seeds on to the patch of ground after taking samples of the soil for testing (more on that later when results come out but more creepy crawlies inside so must remember to build bug hotels).
Decide to forget about these and either be pleasantly surprised or disappointed.

Watering: Spray mist sneakily daily

Result thus far: Not a sausage

Where: Mini-greenhouse (east-facing)
What:
  • Nasturtiums
  • Sweet peas
  • Marigolds
Conditions: sheltered but getting sun in top two shelves to only sowed seeds on these in compost containing John Innes (some fertile person?). Sown  in seed trays and empty juice pots.

Watering:daily - may consider adding the frost fleece but weather has been quite warm till yesterday.

Results thus far
- nothing showing - not sure what to make of that.

Internal sowing
Where: Kitchen window sill - (east-facing)
What:
  • Marigold in a pot (kit of a plastic pot with compost and seeds and lid)
  • Rocket in a pot (kit)
  • Coriander in a pot (kit)
  • Dahlia seeds in propagator seed tray
  • Chinese lantern in propagator seed tray
  • Arrowroot in propagator seed tray

Conditions: Gets light on the sill most of the morning.
Watering:
Daily misting with filtered water.
Resorted to making a camomile and garlic concoction and spraying the sprouted seedlings today (but filtered water on unsprouted stuff).

Writing this blog has caused further panic - will reduce watering and use spray twice a week (Tues and Fri).

Results thus far:
Day 1 (Fri) Sowed all except arrowroot. That was soaked and kept in a warm, dark place for two days to enable swelling before sowing.
Day 2 (Sat)
Day 3 (Sun) - rocket in pot (a whole kit effectively)  sprouted. Arrowroot sown.
Day 4 (Mon) - Marigolds in pot (a whole kit effectively) sprouted. Lid of the pot for rocket and turn pot.
Day 5: Marigolds lid came off and turned to allow even sunning. Dahlia starting to sprout.
Day 6: More dahlias and the other sprouted pots doing well.

Internal sowing (sowing)
Where: Upper floor windowsill (south facing)
Conditions: Gets lights most of the morning

  • Chinese lantern x 1
  • Wahaca chilli sticks x 2 (in one pot)
Watering:
Daily misting with filtered water.
Resorted to making a camomile and garlic concoction and spraying the sprouted seedlings today (but filtered water on unsprouted stuff).

Results:
Day 1 (Fri) Sowed all
Day 2 (Sat) nothing
